The Helikite was designed in 1993 by Sandy Allsopp and immediately afterwards the firm Allsopp Helikites Limited was founded to sell the promising early designs. Having studied Zoology at Reading University and working as an Agronomist for many years, Mr. Allsopp realised that the biggest pest to the agricultural industry is birds, responsible for by far the highest percentage of yield loss of any individual pests. Knowing that when flying kites basically work extremely well for scaring birds he designed and patented a combination of a balloon and a kite in order to overcome the shortfalls of normal kites regarding their flying performance.

Sales are now world-wide, covering every continent except Antarctica (we have plans...). This is because of Helikites extensive applications and the ease by which they can be transported by air-mail. From the beginning the business has been going from strength to strength and Helikites are one of the most popular means of birdscaring in the U.K.

Patented in the UK and abroad the Helikite has improved over the years. Materials have become stronger and lighter, and experience by Allsopp Helikites and thousands of users have led to design improvements such as the adjustable keel and the Lightweight Helikite.
